A Milwaukee man who shot and killed a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier on his route in 2022, because he and another man believed the carrier had stolen their drug package, has been sentenced to 38 years in federal prison.

Chief U.S. District Judge Pamela Pepper sentenced Kevin McCaa, 40, on Oct. 14, 2026, and ordered five years of supervised release after his prison term, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin said. McCaa pleaded guilty on July 8, 2026, to the murder of a U.S. postal employee and to firing a gun during a crime of violence.

What happened on Dec. 9, 2022

Aundre Cross, 44, had worked for the Postal Service for 18 years, Oxygen reported when the charges were filed in 2022. On the afternoon of Dec. 9, 2022, he was delivering mail in Milwaukee when he was shot in the head and killed.

McCaa and Charles Ducksworth Jr. watched Cross for more than 30 minutes before the shooting and targeted him because they thought he had stolen their drug package, prosecutors said. Afterward, the two threw the gun into a nearby creek, changed their phone numbers and got rid of their clothes.

How they were caught

Investigators used warrants for phone records, automated license plate readers and surveillance video from homes and businesses around the scene to track the two men before and after the killing, according to the office. McCaa and Ducksworth were arrested on Dec. 27, 2022, and have been in federal custody since.

At the hearing, Pepper credited that “old-fashioned” investigative work. She found the killing was “premeditated, planned beforehand, with malice aforethought” and called it “incomprehensible,” the office said.

“This was a cold-blooded, senseless murder of a beloved member of his family and the community he served,” First Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad D. Schimel said.

Remembered by fellow carriers

When McCaa pleaded guilty in July 2026, Rudy Polk, who worked as a letter carrier for two decades, told CBS 58 that Cross had a wife and three children. “Aundre is gone but not forgotten,” Polk said.

What happens next

Ducksworth pleaded guilty to the same crimes and is scheduled to be sentenced by Pepper on Nov. 18, 2026. A third person was charged in 2022 with lying to investigators about the killing. The sentencing announcement does not mention that case.

The Milwaukee Police Department, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the FBI investigated, with help from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office and the Wauwatosa Police Department.
