Man on Electronic Monitoring Charged With Murdering CTA Janitor at Damen Green Line Station
Chevazz Campbell, 37, is charged with first-degree murder in the Oct. 8, 2026, stabbing of CTA janitor Julian Mobley at the Damen Green Line station in Chicago.

A 37-year-old man who was on electronic monitoring is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of a Chicago Transit Authority janitor at the Damen Green Line station on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026, police and prosecutors said.
Chevazz Campbell also faces armed robbery and weapons charges in the death of Julian Mobley, 41, NBC Chicago and ABC7 Chicago reported. A judge ordered him held in jail.
What prosecutors say happened
Mobley was working at the station at about 3 p.m. when Campbell entered without paying and got into a confrontation with CTA employees, according to a court filing by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors allege that Campbell sprayed Mobley with mace, chased him and stabbed him in the neck, and that witnesses and surveillance cameras captured the attack.
Mobley was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Campbell was taken into custody hours later, police said.
Questions about monitoring
Campbell was on electronic monitoring as a condition of probation in two felony cases at the time, prosecutors said. Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke and the transit workers’ union criticized the monitoring system in a joint statement. “On at least four occasions prior to the murder, prosecutors filed to violate the defendant’s probation because of repeated curfew violations,” the statement said.
A father of two
Mobley had been a member of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 308 since 2018, union president Pennie McCoach said. He was a father of two, a 14-year-old and an 18-month-old, and had been married to his wife for 20 years, she said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times and NBC Chicago.
The allegations have not been proven in court.
