The boyfriend of a dead 3-year-old girl’s sister was given 60 years in jail for ignoring the child so badly that the boy, King Dewey, weighed only 19 pounds and looked like he was made of bones, according to ABC/NBC Beaumont affiliate KBMT. He can get out of jail after 30 years.
According to reports, the defendant, 26-year-old Jaylin Jevon Lewis, spoke on his own behalf during the sentencing phase of his trial after being found guilty of two counts of injury to a child with intent to cause serious bodily injury.
However, when his defense lawyer Tom Burbank asked him if he respected the jury’s decision, the defendant said, “Not really.”
He later said the same thing back to the prosecutor, Tommy Coleman, during cross-examination in Jefferson County, Texas.
Coleman said, “Even as you sit there, it seems a little sorry for itself.”
King was found dead in a closet on May 31, 2022, after being starved to death. The closet door was locked with a bolt. The sheriff’s office said it was “horrific” that the child had died.
This week, his 21-year-old sister Kristen Louis pleaded guilty to hurting a child and was given 30 years in prison. Thirty-three-year-old Tina Louise Louis, who left the child with Louis and Lewis, is still being charged.
Lewis was found guilty on Wednesday and given his term on Thursday. He tried to blame Tina Louis while he was on the stand.
Lewis said, “If I could go back in time and do something about it myself, I would have given him a better chance than what his mother was taking away from him.”
Coleman later told him, “You are asking for attention.” “Did you do something nice for King?”
