Delaware State Police say a 61-year-old man from New Castle died Saturday night after being hit by a car while crossing North Dupont Highway.
The accident happened around 9:46 p.m., close to Hazel dell Avenue. Police say a 60-year-old woman from Bear was driving a black Volkswagen Passat south in the right lane when the pedestrian crossed the road.
Police say the walker was walking on the right side of the highway when he crossed to the east and stepped right into the path of the coming car. The driver tried to avoid hitting the man, but the car still hit him.
The person on foot was declared dead at the scene. His name is being kept secret until his next of kin are notified.
The driver was taken to a nearby hospital for care after getting minor injuries.
Due to the crash, the highway was stopped for about five hours. The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit is now looking into what happened.
Police want anyone who saw the crash to call Master Cpl. J. Forester at 302-365-8485 if they know anything about it.
