A young man is accused of killing the father of his girlfriend during a fight over “inappropriate” social media posts. Deputies in Broward County, Florida, say that Lawan Jones, 18, ran away with the victim’s daughter. He later turned himself in, though, and the girl is safe.
The sheriff’s office says that officers and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue were called to the 1500 block of Northeast 28th Street on Monday at 4:44 p.m. for a report of gunfire. They found 44-year-old Keith Bryan Poole, who had been shot several times.
“At the scene, emergency workers found Poole, who had been shot multiple times,” they said. Poole was taken to Broward Health North by paramedics, but he was later declared dead there.
Investigators say this happened because Jones reportedly wrote social media posts that Poole didn’t like. They didn’t say what these posts were about or how the fight supposedly turned violent.
Deputies said that witnesses said the killing started when Poole found out that Jones had made some posts on social media that he thought were inappropriate. “Witnesses said Jones got into a fight with Poole at some point and shot him.”
Before they named Jones, the officers wrote, “Witnesses say Poole was standing outside of his house when someone he knew started shooting.” Detectives say that the shooter left the scene of the crime after it happened. Detectives from the BSO’s Crime Scene and Homicide Unit reacted and are now looking into the shooting death.
Jones and his girlfriend ran away from the scene of the crime, and deputies looked for them. Jones eventually turned himself in to the police on Wednesday. He is being held in Broward County jail without bond for a charge of first-degree murder with a gun.
Law & Crime asked deputies for the probable cause statement. The court records don’t show a defense lawyer or any upcoming meetings.
