Florida police have officially charged a mother with killing her 3-year-old twins, but the counts were not high enough to be considered murder charges.
WTVJ, an NBC station in Miami, reports that 43-year-old Shirlene N. Alcime is being charged with aggravated manslaughter. Police in Miami-Dade County say they were called to I-95 on February 2. Police say Alcime jumped off the wall of the highway and onto the train tracks below just as they arrived.
While this was going on, Milendhet and Milendhere Napoleon-Cadet, both 3, were found in the backseat of a close car. They were not moving or responding and had been foaming at the mouth. A short time later, they were declared dead. Their mother made it through.
Alcime supposedly denied giving her kids anything that made them sick, but she did say that her family was having a hard time with money and that she couldn’t leave her kids with their dad because they would end up “homeless or sleeping in a car.” She is said to have said that she took the twins to McDonald’s and Chuck E. Cheese that day so they could “have a good day.”
“The defendant admitted that he thought about either jumping off the bridge with both victims or throwing them off one by one and then jumping to kill them,” police wrote.
Authorities had previously said that murder charges might be brought, but they didn’t do so right away because they were still working on the basic investigation. For instance, the chemical tests on the kids were still not done. Police have been asked by Law & Crime for more details, like what killed Milendhet and Milendhere.
According to WTVJ, Alcime sat in a wheelchair when he went to court on Friday. He was hospitalized after the event. She had already been jailed for aggravated child abuse with bodily harm, but she has said she is not guilty.
